How Montana paycheck taxes work

Four tax lines come out of a Montana paycheck: federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%), and Montana state withholding. No Montana city or county taxes wages, and the state takes no disability, paid-leave, or unemployment deduction from employees. Anything else on your stub is your own election: 401(k), health premiums, HSA, and similar benefits.

Montana's 2026 formula annualizes your pay and applies the table for the filing status on your Form MW-4. Nothing is withheld on the first $16,100 (single or married filing separately), $32,200 (married filing jointly), or $24,150 (head of household), matching the 2026 federal standard deduction. Wages above that are withheld at 4.7% up to $63,600, $127,200, or $95,400, then 5.65%. Married couples who both work can check the box on MW-4 line 2 to use the single table, and employers use the single table when no MW-4 is on file.

Since the 2024 redesign, Montana withholding has no personal exemptions, dependent exemptions, or state deductions, so filing status is the only input that changes the formula. Form MW-4 line 3 adds a fixed extra amount per paycheck, and line 4 lets you name a specific amount to withhold in place of the calculation; neither is modeled here. The Department of Revenue rounds each paycheck's withholding up to the whole dollar, while this calculator shows cents, so a stub can read up to 99 cents higher.

House Bill 337 cut Montana's top rate from 5.9% to 5.65% for 2026 and widened the 4.7% band from about $21,100 to $47,500 of taxable income for single filers; the 2027 tables move to a 5.4% top rate with wider bands. Bonuses paid separately are withheld at a flat 5% for Montana alongside the 22% federal rate, and this site's bonus calculator applies 5%. Montana's only reciprocity agreement is with North Dakota: North Dakota residents claim the exemption on MW-4 line 5c and owe no Montana withholding.

Montana paycheck FAQ

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Montana?

Federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, and Montana withholding at 4.7% of annualized wages above $16,100 (single), $32,200 (married filing jointly), or $24,150 (head of household), rising to 5.65% above $63,600, $127,200, or $95,400. There is no local income tax and no state payroll premium. The quick answer above shows the result for a single filer on $60,000 paid biweekly, and the calculator recomputes it for your pay and filing status.

What is the Montana income tax rate for 2026?

4.7% on taxable income up to $47,500 for single filers, $95,000 for married filing jointly, or $71,250 for head of household, and 5.65% above. House Bill 337 lowered the top rate from 5.9% for 2026 and widened the 4.7% band from about $21,100. Several calculators still show 5.9% and the narrower band; the 2026 Department of Revenue tables use 5.65%, and so does this page.

Why are there no allowances on the Montana MW-4?

Montana dropped its own exemptions and deductions from withholding in the 2024 redesign and now starts from the federal standard deduction for your filing status: $16,100, $32,200, or $24,150 for 2026. Filing status is the main input. Line 2 lets two-earner couples use the single table, line 3 adds extra withholding per paycheck, and line 4 sets a fixed amount. With no MW-4 on file, your employer uses the single table.

What changed in Montana paycheck withholding for 2026?

The Department of Revenue rebuilt the tables for House Bill 337. The top rate fell from 5.9% to 5.65%, the 4.7% band widened from about $21,100 to $47,500 of taxable income for single filers, and the zero bracket now equals the 2026 federal standard deduction. The 2026 Form MW-4 was updated to match. A further step to a 5.4% top rate with wider bands is scheduled for 2027.

I live in North Dakota and work in Montana. Is Montana tax withheld?

No, once you claim the reciprocity exemption on Form MW-4 line 5c. Montana and North Dakota have a reciprocal agreement, so North Dakota residents pay only North Dakota tax on their Montana wages and no Montana withholding comes out. North Dakota is Montana's only reciprocity partner; residents of every other state have Montana tax withheld on wages earned in Montana.

How are bonuses taxed in Montana?

A bonus paid separately from regular wages is withheld at a flat 5% for Montana, plus the 22% federal flat rate and FICA. Montana kept the 5% supplemental rate for 2026 even though the top income tax rate dropped to 5.65%. When a bonus is combined with a regular paycheck, the normal 2026 table applies to the total. This site's bonus calculator applies 5% for Montana.
