Missouri withholds on eight brackets for 2026, from 0% on the first $1,348 of annualized taxable wages to 4.7% on everything over $9,436, after a standard deduction of $16,100 single, $32,200 married with one income, or $24,150 head of household. Kansas City and St. Louis add a 1% earnings tax if you live or work there. Figures follow IRS Publication 15-T and the Missouri Department of Revenue 2026 withholding formula.

How Missouri paycheck taxes work

Four tax lines come out of a Missouri paycheck: federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%), and Missouri state withholding. A fifth line, the 1% earnings tax, appears if you live or work in Kansas City or St. Louis. Missouri has no state disability, paid-leave, or long-term care premium, so any other deductions on your stub are your own elections: 401(k), health premiums, HSA, and similar benefits.

Missouri's 2026 formula annualizes your pay, subtracts the standard deduction for your MO W-4 status ($16,100 single, married with a working spouse, or married filing separately; $32,200 married with a nonworking spouse; $24,150 head of household), and runs the rest through eight brackets in $1,348 steps: 0% on the first $1,348, then 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 3.5%, 4%, 4.5%, and 4.7% on everything over $9,436. Because the brackets are narrow, nearly all taxable wages land in the 4.7% band. Married filing jointly here uses $32,200; two-earner couples are withheld on $16,100.

The earnings tax is separate from state tax, and this calculator adds it only if you enter a rate. Kansas City charges 1% on residents' wages and on nonresidents' wages earned in the city, renewed by voters in April 2026. St. Louis charges 1% on wages of anyone living or working in the city. Type 1 into the Kansas City or St. Louis earnings tax field to include it, or leave it at 0. The St. Louis 0.5% payroll expense tax is employer-paid and never appears on your stub.

Missouri has had no personal or dependent exemptions in withholding since 2019, so filing status is the only MO W-4 input besides optional extra withholding. Bonuses paid separately are withheld at a flat 4.7%, which this site's bonus calculator applies. Missouri has no reciprocity agreements; nonresidents are withheld only on wages for work performed in Missouri. For 2026 the top rate stayed at 4.7% because the Senate Bill 3 revenue trigger was not met; brackets moved from $1,313 to $1,348 steps and standard deductions follow the 2026 federal amounts.

Missouri paycheck FAQ

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Missouri?

Federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, and Missouri withholding of 0% to 4.7% of annualized wages after the $16,100, $32,200, or $24,150 standard deduction, with almost all taxable wages at 4.7%. Add 1% if you live or work in Kansas City or St. Louis. The quick answer above shows the result for a single filer on $60,000, and the calculator recomputes it for your pay, status, and city.

What is the Missouri income tax rate for 2026?

Graduated from 0% to 4.7%. The 2026 withholding formula applies 0% to the first $1,348 of annualized taxable wages, then 2%, 2.5%, 3%, 3.5%, 4%, and 4.5% in $1,348 steps, and 4.7% on everything over $9,436. Some calculators still show a 4.8%, 4.95%, or 5.4% top rate for Missouri; the Department of Revenue's 2026 formula tops out at 4.7%, and so does this page.

Did Missouri cut income taxes for 2026?

No rate cut took effect for 2026. The top rate stayed at 4.7% because the revenue trigger in Senate Bill 3 was not met. What did change: the brackets were re-indexed from $1,313 steps to $1,348 steps, and the standard deduction rose to the 2026 federal amounts of $16,100 single, $32,200 married with one income, and $24,150 head of household, which slightly lowers withholding at the same salary.

Do I pay the Kansas City or St. Louis earnings tax if I only work there?

Yes. Kansas City's 1% earnings tax applies to residents' wages and to nonresidents' wages earned inside the city; voters renewed it in April 2026. St. Louis charges 1% on wages of anyone who lives or works in the city. Your employer withholds it on top of Missouri state tax. Enter 1 in the earnings tax field to include it in your estimate. No other Missouri city levies a wage tax.

Why are there no allowances on my Missouri W-4?

Missouri removed personal and dependent exemptions and the federal-tax deduction from its withholding formula in 2019. Your filing status now sets the standard deduction ($16,100, $32,200, or $24,150), and that is the only adjustment. Line 2 lets you add a flat extra amount per paycheck; line 3 lets you substitute a lower fixed amount if you expect a refund. Missouri also rounds each check's withholding to the whole dollar; this calculator shows cents.

How are bonuses taxed in Missouri?

A bonus or commission paid separately from regular wages is withheld at a flat 4.7% for Missouri, plus the 22% federal flat rate and FICA, and 1% more if the Kansas City or St. Louis earnings tax applies. When a bonus is combined with a regular paycheck, the normal 2026 formula applies to the total. This site's bonus calculator uses the 4.7% Missouri rate.
