Massachusetts withholds a flat 5% of wages for 2026 (9% on annualized wages over $1,107,750) after subtracting up to $2,000 of Social Security and Medicare tax and a $4,400 personal exemption from Form M-4. A 0.46% Paid Family and Medical Leave premium also comes out, on wages up to $184,500; there is no local income tax. Figures follow IRS Publication 15-T and Massachusetts Circular M, effective January 1, 2026.

How Massachusetts paycheck taxes work

Five lines come out of a Massachusetts paycheck: federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%), Massachusetts state withholding, and your share of Paid Family and Medical Leave. No Massachusetts city or town taxes wages. Anything else on your stub is your own election: 401(k), health premiums, HSA, and similar benefits.

Circular M starts by subtracting the Social Security and Medicare tax withheld from your pay, up to $2,000 a year. It then subtracts the exemption from your Form M-4: $4,400 when you claim one exemption, $3,400 plus $1,000 per exemption when you claim more, and $0 when you claim none. The remainder is taxed at 5%, and at 9% on any portion of annualized wages above $1,107,750, the 2026 threshold for the 4% surtax. This calculator values married filing jointly at five exemptions, $8,400, and adds $1,000 per dependent.

Massachusetts has no standard deduction. If your annual wages are under $8,000 and you claim at least one exemption, nothing is withheld for the state. Circular M also allows $120 a year off the tax for head of household and $110 per blind exemption; this calculator leaves those two out, so a head of household stub will show slightly less Massachusetts tax than the figure here.

Paid Family and Medical Leave costs 0.88% of wages in 2026 at employers with 25 or more covered workers and 0.46% at smaller ones; the employee share is 0.46% either way (0.28% medical, 0.18% family), on wages up to the $184,500 Social Security wage base, unchanged from 2025. Bonuses paid separately are withheld at a flat 5%, or 9% on the part that pushes annualized pay over $1,107,750, and this site's bonus calculator applies 5% for Massachusetts. The state has no reciprocity agreements.

Massachusetts paycheck FAQ

How much is taken out of a paycheck in Massachusetts?

Federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, Massachusetts withholding at 5% of annualized wages after up to $2,000 of FICA and your M-4 exemption ($4,400 for one), and 0.46% for Paid Family and Medical Leave. There is no local income tax anywhere in Massachusetts. The quick answer above shows the result for a single filer on $60,000, and the calculator recomputes it for your pay, filing status, and dependents.

What is the Massachusetts income tax rate for 2026?

A flat 5% on wages and most other income, plus a 4% surtax on the portion of income over $1,107,750, for a combined 9% at the top. The threshold is indexed each year and rose from $1,083,150 in 2025; calculators still using the 2025 figure start the 9% band $24,600 too early. Circular M builds the 9% band into the withholding formula, so employers make no separate surtax calculation.

What is the PFML deduction on my Massachusetts paycheck?

Your share of Paid Family and Medical Leave insurance. For 2026 the total contribution is 0.88% of wages at employers with 25 or more covered workers and 0.46% at smaller ones; in both cases the employee pays 0.46%, split 0.28% medical and 0.18% family, on wages up to $184,500. On a $60,000 salary that is $276 a year, about $10.62 per biweekly paycheck. The rates are unchanged from 2025.

How many exemptions should I claim on Form M-4?

Claim 1 for yourself on line 1, which the withholding formula values at $4,400 a year. If you are married and your spouse does not claim their own exemption, write 4 on line 2, for 5 exemptions worth $8,400; if both of you work, each claims only line 1. Add 1 on line 3 for each dependent, worth $1,000 more. Claiming 0 withholds the most. This calculator applies the single, married filing jointly, and dependent values.

Why is FICA subtracted before Massachusetts tax?

Massachusetts allows a deduction of up to $2,000 a year for Social Security and Medicare tax paid, and Circular M applies it during the year: each paycheck's FICA is removed from Massachusetts wages until the running total reaches $2,000. For most full-time workers the cap is reached, so the deduction is worth $100 a year in Massachusetts tax (5% of $2,000), spread across the pay periods.

How are bonuses taxed in Massachusetts?

A bonus paid on its own is withheld at 22% federal (37% above $1,000,000), 6.2% Social Security up to $184,500, 1.45% Medicare, 0.46% PFML, and a flat 5% for Massachusetts. If the bonus plus your regular annualized wages exceeds $1,107,750, the portion above that line is withheld at 9%. This site's bonus calculator applies 5% for Massachusetts.
